The Superpower of Willpower and Won’t Power for Businesswomen
As a woman running your own business, you are no stranger to the challenges and demands of entrepreneurship. While willpower is essential for driving your business forward, there’s another, often overlooked aspect: won’t power. Let’s explore how balancing these two powers can make a significant difference in your professional and personal life.
Willpower is the inner strength to push yourself to do things you know you should do, even when you don’t feel like it. It’s the voice that says, “Yes, I can do this!” This power is crucial for achieving your business goals, meeting deadlines, and overcoming obstacles.
Won’t power, on the other hand, is the ability to say “No” to things that don’t serve you or that you don’t want to do. It’s about setting boundaries and protecting your time and energy. It’s the voice that confidently says, “No, this isn’t right for me!” For businesswomen, won’t power is vital for maintaining balance and preventing burnout.
Understanding when to use willpower and when to exercise won’t power is a true superpower. Here’s how your upbringing might influence these traits:
The Role of Willpower
Willpower is often influenced by your relationship with your father. It’s about taking action, achieving goals, and pushing through challenges. If you had a supportive and encouraging relationship with your father, you’re more likely to develop strong willpower. However, if your father was overly demanding or critical, you might either push yourself too hard to meet expectations or struggle with motivation.
The Importance of Won’t Power
Won’t power is shaped by your relationship with your mother. It’s about setting boundaries, saying no, and prioritizing your well-being. If your mother was good at setting boundaries and taking care of herself, you likely inherited these traits. But if she struggled to say no and often overextended herself, you might find it difficult to set boundaries and protect your own time and energy.
Real-Life Scenario: Preeti’s Journey
Let me share the story of my client, Preeti, to illustrate the impact of won’t power. Preeti was facing significant issues with her bakery business. Despite her hard work and dedication, she felt overwhelmed and unable to maintain a healthy work-life balance.
Through our coaching sessions, we traced these issues back to her childhood in a joint family setup. Growing up, maintaining harmonious relationships with everyone was a priority, and Preeti often saw her mother saying yes to everything. According to Preeti, “But my mother was very happy doing that.” However, we realized that this constant compliance was affecting Preeti’s ability to set boundaries in her own business.
Preeti’s mother’s example of always saying yes had unconsciously taught her that pleasing others was more important than her own needs. In her bakery business, this translated to taking on too many orders, working late hours, and rarely delegating tasks, leading to burnout and stress.
The Transformation
In our sessions, we worked on balancing Preeti’s won’t power. We focused on helping her understand the importance of setting boundaries and saying no when necessary. We practiced techniques to strengthen her won’t power, such as:
- Setting Clear Boundaries: Preeti learned to set clear limits on her work hours and stick to them.
- Delegating Tasks: She started delegating more tasks to her team, freeing up time for strategic planning and self-care.
- Prioritizing Self-Care: Preeti made self-care a priority, ensuring she had time to recharge and stay motivated.
As a result, Preeti noticed a remarkable difference in her business. She was no longer overwhelmed and stressed. Her bakery began to thrive as she could focus more on quality and innovation rather than just trying to keep up with the demands. The positive effects of balancing her won’t power rippled through her life, enhancing her personal well-being and professional success.
