How the need to find the right products for her daughter led Malika Sadani start The Moms Co

No one is expected to have all the answers and I strongly believe asking for help is a sign of strength, not a weakness- Malika Sadani, , Founder & CEO, The Moms Co

What were you doing before starting your venture? How did it all began?

I have degrees in engineering and business management and I was working as a banker before I became an entrepreneur.

When my daughter had her first skin reaction, I realized that there was a dearth of natural, safe and effective products for moms and babies in India. After speaking with over 200 moms, I realized there is a need for natural, safe products but there weren’t many options. I would often ask friends and family members travelling from abroad to bring products for me and I wondered – Why should it be so difficult to find a natural and safe baby lotion?

The Moms Co. was born out of a personal need to address this problem and to provide natural, certified toxin-free and cruelty-free products that are both safe and effective. Products that moms could use without worrying about any harmful chemicals and toxins, right from the beginning of their beautiful journey to every step of the way.

What were the challenges you faced when you initially started your venture?

Initially, it was getting people to align with our vision. Since we are very conscious of our product formulation and have set standards, they had to adhere to our standards and in a way that wasn’t done before. Being a woman entrepreneur had its own set of challenges as people didn’t took me seriously.

However, over the last 4 years, we have come a long way – from fighting people and their perceptions to getting people to imbibe the mission and ensure that it reflects in everything we do. People have now started believing in our vision of creating high-quality products that don’t compromise on the integrity of any ingredient or product we make.

How was the support from family and your partner when you started your journey?

My husband Mohit is also the Co-Founder at The Moms Co, so we are very reliant of our family members. We are lucky to have a good support system in the form of my family members who live so close by and always love to spend time and take care of the girls.

What are your secrets of balancing both work and your family life?

I believe in following the 3 mantras – Discipline, Routine and Prioritizing.

I work on 4-5 projects at any given time and just allocating time for all and planning my day helps me efficiently work through them all. Over the years I have also gotten better at adding everything to my calendar and also delegating. It helps to have efficient and dedicated teams at work which makes it easier to delegate tasks and focus on important things.

I do the same with the girls! In order to ensure that my daughters are able to use their time productively, we make a list of activities that they can do when they are bored and details of extracurricular activities they attend.

There are days allotted to specific activities which my daughters enjoy such as dancing, playing board games and watching movies. The time we spend as a family doing these activities help us bond. I catch up on work or make calls once my daughters are in bed which is relatively early.

What are your future plans in the next 5 years in terms of the expansion of your business?

At The Moms Co. we are on a mission to help moms make safe, natural and effective choices for themselves and their families. We have a range of natural, certified toxin-free products for Pregnancy, Baby care and Face Care. In next 5 years, we wish to add millions of other moms to our mission and help them make safe, natural and effective choices for themselves and their families. We will continue to focus on product development and add many more products to our portfolio.

Currently, our range of products solve concerns such as stretch marks, acne, pigmentation, hair fall control and dark circles. Our range of baby care products include tear-free, soap-free bathing solutions, talc-free powder, mineral-based sunscreen that is also water-proof among others. All our products are Australian-Certified Toxin-Free™ & Certified Made Safe™ by Safe Cosmetics Australia as well as PETA certified cruelty-free which ensures that moms can use these products without worrying about harmful chemicals or toxins.

What are your tips for fellow Moms in Business or those moms who want to start their own business?

Believe in Yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself you can’t expect others to believe in you either. And don’t be afraid to ask for help. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness.. No one is expected to have all the answers and I strongly believe asking for help is a sign of strength, not a weakness.
